The California Council on Gerontology and Geriatrics (CCGG) promotes the quality of life of California’s diverse aging population through leadership and by fostering statewide collaborations among educational programs, providers, practitioners and public policy advocates in the field of aging.
To cultivate a state that celebrates the value of every older Californian.
CCGG was founded in early 1980 when James Birren, the first CCGG Executive Director and Dean of the University of Southern California’s Leonard Davis School of Gerontology, and his co-visionary, Bonnie Russell of CSU San Jose and head of the California Department of Aging, were successful in securing a two-year planning grant from the Luke B. Hancock Foundation.
Since that time, CCGG has been the only statewide association which links academic institutions — including students, educators, researchers, and administrators — to older adults and their families and to legislators, service providers, business people, and other stakeholders. CCGG represents California’s many exceptional institutions, including those from the California State University and University of California systems, private institutions, and community colleges. We likewise represent members from the diverse disciplines which constitute the field of aging, including gerontology, geriatrics and the health professions, social work, psychology and human development, business, public policy, and many others.

As a board member of Lifelong Medical Care, a Bay Area Community Health Center specializing in care of the elderly (Over Sixty Health Center, etc.), I am working on trying to ease the critical shortage of geriatric care providers in California and Beyond. I would much appreciate any and all information about the work that CCGG is doing toward this effort. Please e-mail me whatever relevant data you have, or phone me at (510)915-4313. I’d like to talk to someone in the CCGG or the Community College system to discuss what community colleges are offering in home caregiver certification programs. I’also like to discuss how legislation might support these programs.
Can you recommend a Gerontologist in Long Beach CA area who can give advice and preplanning about future health care and living needs for an individual without family to support them? Thanks so much.
