Happy Grandparents Day

Grandparents Day is celebrated on September 8th, 2024.  The idea for this special day was brought forward by Marian McQuade, a West Virginia housewife. Marian (who had 43 grandchildren!), is credited with making Grandparents Day a reality. McQuade’s efforts to recognize the contributions of older adults led to the U.S. Senate and President Jimmy Carter officially proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day in 1978. National Grandparents Day serves three main purposes: to honor grandparents, to provide them with an opportunity to show love for their grandchildren, and to help children recognize the strength, knowledge, and guidance that older generations can offer.

Celebrate your Grandparents!

Grandparents Day is a wonderful opportunity to show appreciation for the wisdom, love, and support that grandparents provide. This year, let’s make it extra special by spending quality time with our grandparents. Whether you live nearby or far away, there are many ways to connect and create lasting memories.

Suggestions for Activities

  1. Share Stories: Sit down with your grandparents and ask them to share stories from their past. This can be a great way to learn about your family history and gain insights into their experiences.

  2. Cook Together: Prepare a meal together using a family recipe. Cooking can be a fun and bonding activity, and you might even learn some new culinary skills.

  3. Take a Walk: Enjoy a leisurely walk in a nearby park or around the neighborhood. It’s a simple yet meaningful way to spend time together and enjoy the outdoors.

  4. Play Games: Board games, card games, or even puzzles can be a great way to have fun and engage with your grandparents.

  5. Virtual Visit: If you can’t be there in person, set up a video call. You can still share stories, play games, or even cook together virtually.

  6. Create a Scrapbook: Work on a scrapbook together, filled with photos, mementos, and stories. This can be a cherished keepsake for both you and your grandparents.

  7. Watch a Movie: Pick a classic movie or a favorite film of your grandparents and watch it together. It’s a relaxing way to spend time and enjoy each other’s company.

Grandparents Day is a chance to honor and cherish the special bond between generations. Let’s make the most of this day by creating beautiful memories with our grandparents.
